A (World) Series of Ads

As a result of a series of "got milk" ads during the playoffs and the World series, someone has decided there's nothing funny about steroid use.

"There is nothing humorous about steroid abuse," said Tim Brosnan, executive vice president for business for the league. "I would think that the California Milk Processor Board and their advertising agency would know better regarding an issue that threatens America's youth."

Excuse me Mr. Brosnan. It's a parody and it's about milk. How does that threaten America's youth? I think if an organization (and you know they had to know--but that is another story) sets themselves up for this kind of ribbing, than it is fair game. It's just like anything else in politics, religion, or society. It just pokes at a raw nerve. And a very deserving poke, in my opinion.

Hey Wilma I'm home!

How bad can she be? CBS reports,"At 11 a.m. EDT, the storm was located about 170 miles from Cozumel, Mexico, and heading west-northwest at nearly 7 mph. Maximum sustained winds were "only" 145 mph.

Still, Wilma is expected to get stronger over the next 24 hours, and hurricane center director Max Mayfield warned, "If this were the only hurricane of the season, this would be the event of the year."

Even residents who rode out Charley are making evacuation plans, reports Acosta. After Katrina, it just doesn't make sense to stay.

"We're outta here. Tallahassee, here I come," sang a woman heading for northern Florida.

Even that might not be far enough.

"This storm could affect the whole east Coast next week, as possibly even a hurricane ... Long Island and coastal New England," warned Cullen. "We could see a pretty serious storm if this storm track holds up."

Internet Artists Pay Tribute To Taylor Behl

Posted by Teresa on Remembering Taylor

I found a few touching tributes to Taylor Behl today on the internet.

An AcidPlanet.com member presented this video. You can view it by clicking here or on the Video of the Week marquee. It might be good to visit this artist's page as some friend's of Ben Fawley are members of AcidPlanet and have posted a review of this video. a notable quote from the review is "A few of us are having to seek counseling over how Ben has messed with their heads. " But this is about Taylor, and it is a nice tribute.

Another Acidplanet Artist Video Tribute is by Gohan The True Super Saiyan.

Also avaiable is a track from Dark Gnome Productions called Requiem for Taylor Behl

There is a tribute page on Myspace.com as well called Remembering Taylor

If anyone knows of more let me know...I just think this is nice.

Something Cold This Way Comes

For Illustration Friday : Cold.

I hate cold. I think only a day or two out of the season inspires me. The first snow and Christmas. I'm still getting used to fall. In Maryland we have one, in Minnesota we didn't.

Well It isn't that cold yet. But the temperature difference in the last week and a half can almost feel like it. At any rate, by the time we get all the kids outfitted, and then bundled up, there may already be a foot of snow on the ground.

Peace and warmth. :)

Sunday Nugget-The Toledo Riot in a Word.

Hilarious! I don't mean the riot itself or the result. I mean the cause...

I think it is funny that a guy named Bill White brings a group of neo-nazi's into an ethnically diverse neighborhood, starts shouting racial epitaphs and get's run out...Who could think that anything otherwise would or could happen? Check out HistoryMike's postings for Oct 14-16 for more.

Today's Gospel reading is about giving Caesar what is Caesar's. Perhaps Hitler keeps getting what is Hitler's, aye?

Weird Sex

Being a family-friendly site this title may be shocking. But in the spirit of family friendliness I am compelled to post this.

Ben Fawley, the suspected killer of Taylor Behl, has indeed confessed to killing her. He claims it was an accident during a consensual sex act. An accident he nonetheless initiated, experimenting with erotic asphyxiation. Was it murder? I think it was.

But that is not what I want to write about today. I want to talk about weird sex. In Catholic Moral teachings there is a term called Natural Law. Sexual morality is taught according to natural law. It basically states that man and woman are created differently and complementarily. This means that the standard equipment for each is sufficient for the other, are not interchangeable, and are a means to a tangible end.

This doesn't speak much to the pleasure of sex but it does contain some clues. It would at least have been helpful to Taylor Behl. The first clue that something was awry, if this was indeed consensual (which I and others do not believe it was for a second), would have been the strangulation part. The windpipe does not and never has been a part of the natural law concerning sex. It is dangerous to cut off oxygen to the brain. A college freshman should know this. If you are unsure just ask Michael Hutchence . Oh wait...You can't. The lead singer of the band INXS died apparently due to auto-erotic asphyxiation. As one message board cited " If your orgasms are so lame that you need to cut off your oxygen supply to enjoy them than something is very very wrong with you." I have to agree.

Now here's the reason I think it is murder. Auto-erotic asphyxiation is done to oneself. And Ben Fawley posted to his blog, that there was something HE wanted to try with Taylor. This, after he and a friend signed up to attend an apparent sado-masochist workshop in Philly. As a parent, I hope he gets what he deserves.

It may be taboo to talk "weird sex" with your kids. But this is not the 50's anymore. Nowadays kids need to be aware of the dangers they face and the Taylor Behl case contains a long list.

Here are some pointers:

Don't EVER EVER I repeat EVER meet with someone you only know through the internet.

Don't date a man old enough to be your father who claims to be a Goth/skater from the 1980's. Or claiming anything else for that matter.

When a guy grabs your throat, kick him in the nuts.

Learn the difference between creative and creepy.

I'm sure there's more...You can add to this list in the comments section.

Peace and Godspeed.

In Cahoots with Katrina

For the Stop The ACLU Blogburst:

This is an older piece but just in case you are unsure if the ACLU has gone over the top or not I submit this article: ACLU Sues Over Conditions at La. Jail.

From the article:

"A civil rights group filed court papers Thursday demanding access to the New Orleans city jail to investigate allegations that inmates were abandoned for days after Hurricane Katrina, without food or drinking water, in chest-high floodwaters with floating corpses. It took three days to evacuate more than 6,000 inmates from the lockup after the storm hit Aug. 29, prison authorities have said. The prisoners are now being held at 38 state and local lockups around Louisiana.

The American Civil Liberties Union's court filings demand information about where each prisoner is locked up. The group also wants the sheriff's office to halt any cleanup at the jail because it could destroy evidence that prisoners were left standing in bacteria- and petroleum-laden floodwater.

The ACLU was named counsel for all the jail's inmates under a 1994 federal consent decree mandating heath and environmental standards."

So I guess an emergency due to a hurricane still mandates health and environmental standards to a group of criminals that thousands of law abiding citizens could not be afforded? It is bad but this lawsuit is an insult to all the legitimate victims of this disaster.

Peace and good day.

Scared Clickless!

It has been a kind of dark day. A dreary rain has been falling and I spent some time following up on the blogo-drama of the death of Taylor Behl and the internet "clues" surrounding Ben Fawley. The entire story can be read at Court TV's Crime Library.

Being the parent of highly internet friendly teenagers, I was shaken by this story and I laid down some rules in a talk with my teens. We'd had this talk before but I showed them this story as another example.

I can't imagine the pain and loss of Taylor's parents. I can only feel the fear and hurt that wells up inside myself. So I offer this news clip to you for your information and in memory of Ms. Behl...because the only other thing anyone can offer her now is the office of the dead.

Visit and support The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Floating

For Illustration Friday: Float.

I've had the feeling of floating lately. Sometimes life's direction appears that way. But when things are in the air and you feel adrift remember that those born of the Holy Spirit are like the wind as well.

Peace and blessing today.

A Word to the Wise

From today's Christian Prayer:The Liturgy of the Hours--

James 2:14 What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and be filled," and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead.

A PS. to my friend from Crisfield: Dude, what are you looking for at 3AM?
