You're So Vain

For Photo Friday: Vanity
I believe the biggest part of vanity is the feeling that we are or can recover that which we once were. Like this photo of me and my sister for instance. I don't think either of us want to go back there except to spare us some aches and pains.
Another part of vanity is the thought that with enough effort we can become what someone else is. I'm thinking of a recent trip to the grocery store where an older man and woman were shopping. The man, equipped in a captain's hat, dockers and standard blue shirt, looked like what he was...a retired gentlemen enjoying the beautiful bayside village where I live. The woman with him? Well let's just say, as hard as she tried, she was NOT Madonna.
To which I offer this quote:
There is nothing so agonizing to the fine skin of vanity as the application of a rough truth. -Edward Bulwer-Lytton
