I passed by the Covenant House in D.C. twice today. I have been on their mailing list for a couple of years, giving occasionally, as I can. I wished I could have stopped in but I was in traffic and working so I couldn't. I have been impressed by the ministry aspect of the Covenant House, when so many agencies would downplay the spiritual dimension of philanthropy.
From their website:
In communities experiencing chronic poverty, high rates of teen unemployment, family instability, and community violence, many youth have a sense of hopelessness about their futures. Some youth become involved in illegal activities and engage in high-risk, unhealthy behaviors such as drug use, prostitution or gang activity. To support our young people in their efforts to empower themselves, CHW has two special support systems for the youth we serve-the Legal Services and Advocacy Program and the Pastoral Ministry Program. The Legal Services and Advocacy Program provides advice, counsel and, when needed, secures legal assistance for our youth. In addition, CHW engages in advocacy work on behalf of our youth and develops young people-through the Youth Congress-- to become their own self-advocates around issues of education, child care, and economic empowerment. The Pastoral Ministry Program recognizes that spirituality is an integral component of the life and well being of each of our youth. Through group and individual counseling, CHW's pastoral minister seeks to reverse the long-term effects of abuse, neglect, and trauma which has been a factor in the lives of many of our youth. The gift given by the Pastoral Ministry program to our young people is the daily reminder that each of them has the God-given power to improve their lives.
