Mamas and Papas's Denny Doherty dies at 66



MONTREAL (AFP) - Canadian singer and songwriter Denny Doherty, a
member of the 1960s folk-rock quartet The Mamas and The Papas, died
in his home outside Toronto at the age of 66, local media said.

Born in 1940 in the east coast city of Halifax, Doherty died at his
home in the Toronto suburb of Mississauga following a brief illness,
according to CBC television.

Doherty was a folk musician with Canadian bands in the early 1960s
before forming The Mamas and The Papas in the United States in 1965
with John Phillips, Cass Elliot and Michelle Phillips.

The group became known worldwide with hits such as "California
Dreamin'," and "Monday, Monday." The foursome split up in 1968 after recording four albums. Doherty pursued a solo career and was inducted into the Canadian
Music Hall of Fame in 1996.

His death leaves Michelle Phillips as the only surviving member of
The Mamas and The Papas Elliot, known as "Mama Cass," died in 1974 at the age of 32, while John Phillips died in 2001 at 65.
