Coretta Scott King Dies

The wife of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has died at 78 years of age. Rest In Peace Mrs. King. Read more here...

Al-Zawahri Issues A Fartwah

"Bush is stinky", he says, "so pull my finger."

I like to consider myself fairly ecumenical. But as I'm sitting here watching A&E's "Flight 93" I remember how angry I was (and I guess still am) at the "religion of peace" called Islam. I know of no other religion where terror and murder are celebrated among it's many adherents. They say the ones committing this evil are the religion's extremists. And Christianity's extremist's ...? A bunch of snakehandlers in the Ozarks somewhere.

My wife and I were discussing how appropriate this airing is, on the day before the President's address and the day after MAD ALI-ZOWIE's video rant. Someone should press that delete button on Zowie's forehead. God bless and protect the President and America. And Allah can eat beans.

Sunday Nugget - Tag Team Demons

Spiritual Warfare is black and white.

From today's gospel:

Mark 1:21 - 28

They went as far as Capernaum, and as soon as the sabbath came he went to the synagogue and began to teach. And his teaching made a deep impression on them because, unlike the scribes, he taught them with authority In their synagogue just then there was a man possessed by an unclean spirit and it shouted, "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God." But Jesus said sharply, "Be quiet! Come out of him!" And the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and with a loud cry went out of him. The people were so astonished that they started asking each other what it all meant. "Here is a teaching that is new" they said "and with authority behind it: he gives orders even to unclean spirits and they obey him." And his reputation rapidly spread everywhere, through all the surrounding Galilean countryside.

Either devils have bad grammar, a multiple personality, or union rules say they must work in groups . The man in the passage was possessed by an unclean spirit but it answered Jesus in the plural. The narrative continues then in the singular. I find it interesting in this instance of the spiritual realm that one thing can be many. The Mark 5 passage about Legion is the same way but the narrative moves from singular to plural.

In Mark 11:24-26 Jesus explains the phenomena: "When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first." Indeed, if you are fighting spiritual warfare, consider it an interest bearing account. Remember when investing in sin the returns are much greater and more dangerous than the principal down.

Use Small Words

The Democrats seem to think they are the only people with intellect and opinion in Washington, DC. Ellen Ratner of Fox and Friend's suggests the Dems explain themselves "in very simple terms" because the American people are too dumb to understand them. Oh! I think most understand them perfectly.

Dumb is in the eye of the beholder but wisdom is only from God.

From today's readings:

May God grant me to speak as he would wish
and express thoughts worthy of his gifts,
since he himself is the guide of Wisdom,
since he directs the sages.
We are indeed in his hand, we ourselves and our words,
with all our understanding, too, and technical knowledge. Wisdom 7:15-16

The Jolly "Green" Giant!

From today's gospel:

"Jesus said, ‘This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know. Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time: he starts to reap because the harvest has come.’" Mark 4:26-29

If you have prepared the soil, and sown the good seed, trust God and He will bring the harvest.

We Know Who Wears The Skirt In This Family

The ACLU proves it's worth by approaching a school about a teen boy's civil liberty to wear a skirt.

"If Michael wants to protest not being allowed to wear shorts, then he should have that right," she said. "And now he shouldn't be told not to wear skirts." But last week, the Coviellos, an ACLU representative and school administrators crafted a compromise.

Michael still couldn't wear shorts to school, but he could wear a skirt - just like female students.

Who Are You, Lord?

From today's reading:

"Suddenly, while he was travelling to Damascus and just before he reached the city, there came a light from heaven all round him. He fell to the ground, and then he heard a voice saying, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ ‘Who are you, Lord?’ he asked, and the voice answered, ‘I am Jesus, and you are persecuting me. Get up now and go into the city, and you will be told what you have to do.’ The men travelling with Saul stood there speechless, for though they heard the voice they could see no one. Saul got up from the ground, but even with his eyes wide open he could see nothing at all, and they had to lead him into Damascus by the hand. For three days he was without his sight, and took neither food nor drink." Acts 9:1-9

Just a note of thanks on the feast day of the Conversion of Paul.

From a homily by Saint John Chrysostom, bishop

For love of Christ, Paul bore every burden.

Paul, more than anyone else, has shown us what man really is, and in what our nobility consists, and of what virtue this particular animal is capable. Each day he aimed ever higher; each day he rose up with greater ardour and faced with new eagerness the dangers that threatened him. He summed up his attitude in the words: I forget what is behind me and push on to what lies ahead. When he saw death imminent, he bade others share his joy: Rejoice and be glad with me! And when danger, injustice and abuse threatened, he said: I am content with weakness, mistreatment and persecution. These he called the weapons of righteousness, thus telling us that he derived immense profit from them.

Thus, amid the traps set for him by his enemies, with exultant heart he turned their every attack into a victory for himself; constantly beaten, abused and cursed, he boasted of it as though he were celebrating a triumphal procession and taking trophies home, and offered thanks to God for it all: Thanks be to God who is always victorious in us! This is why he was far more eager for the shameful abuse that his zeal in preaching brought upon him than we are for the most pleasing honours, more eager for death than we are for life, for poverty than we are for wealth; he yearned for toil far more than others yearn for rest after toil. The one thing he feared, indeed dreaded, was to offend God; nothing else could sway him. Therefore, the only thing he really wanted was always to please God."

Can I get an amen?!

Peace and be blessed

I Call You Friends

From today's gospel:

"You are my friends,
if you do what I command you.
I shall not call you servants any more,
because a servant does not know his master’s business;
I call you friends,
because I have made known to you everything I have learnt from my Father.
You did not choose me: no, I chose you;
and I commissioned you to go out and to bear fruit,
fruit that will last;
and then the Father will give you anything you ask him in my name.
What I command you is to love one another." John 15:9 - 17

It is an awesome thing to be called "friend" by God. Even more so when you consider how easy it is to befriend evil. We often look at evil as a particular choice to do something. What we often fail to see is that evil can also be the choice not to do something. It can be outright but more often it comes in the form of the habitual, unconscious attitudes that block us from "loving one another" and block the Lord from "making known to us everything".

As a friend of God, take some time today to see what really is up your sleeve, that you may go out and bear fruit that will last.

Peace and joy.

I Hate Mondays!

I don't so much hate Mondays anymore but my son does. It seems he really gets out of synch over the weekends. Perhaps it's not the Monday but the waking on Monday. Whatever it is it brought about tears and an age 8 heartache that was breaking my heart also. Probably because I saw myself at that age feeling the same way. It has inspired him to want to be homeschooled for all the wrong reasons. :)

My Prayer for Justin this morning :

For the Lord my God is my sun and my shield.
The Lord gives grace and glory.
He will not deny his good things
to those who walk in purity.
Blessed is he who trusts in you,
O Lord of hosts. Psalm 84:11-12 From today's Morning Prayer.

Sunday Nugget - The Inner Revolution

From Today's Second Reading : 1 Corinthians 7:29 - 31

"Brothers, this is what I mean: our time is growing short. Those who have wives should live as though they had none, and those who mourn should live as though they had nothing to mourn for; those who are enjoying life should live as though there were nothing to laugh about; those whose life is buying things should live as though they had nothing of their own; and those who have to deal with the world should not become engrossed in it. I say this because the world as we know it is passing away."

Say what?! Those who have wives should live as though they had none? Not if my wife has any say in the matter. No we are not talking about Hugh Hefner's life verse either. Rather this reading comes in the middle of what I like to call the "stations of life" chapter, where Paul is discussing the various relationships of husband and wives and God, and singleness and God. Paul is commenting on whether people should marry or not and what the ramifications of such things would be.

Then he says time is short. And calls for a revolution of those things he has just discussed. The husband should live as though he has no wife in the same way as a single person regarding God. He should now live with a singular focus on service to the Lord. Not at the cost of his marriage but as a part of the marriage. The change should be so profound as to make the mourning stop mourning, the joyful somber, the affluent humble, and the worldly removed from their attachment to the world.

Because of Jesus the world as we know it is passing away. Jesus fundamentally changes the person who belongs to Him. He changes the believers circumstances by changing the believer. When things are viewed through Jesus' lens everything is offered to Him as an act of love and service.

In this way Jesus changes everything.

Friday Night Video- That's The Way God Planned It by Billy Preston and George Harrison

Before there was Bandaid, Liveaid, and Michael Jacksonaid, there was George Harrison and the Concert for Bangladesh. George's friend Ravi Shankar informed the former "quiet" Beatle of the terrible conditions of his homeland. George had an epiphany realizing one thing : "We are the world, we are the children We are the ones who make a brighter day So lets start giving." So he decided to gather all of his friends together for a benefit show. After all, "that's what friends are for!" And history was made and the world blest, for generations to come.

In this clip is the performance of the song "That's The Way God Planned It" by Billy Preston! It's a classic. And Billy's "revival" at the end is awesome and well worth the wait.

Enjoy.

Fog Delay

For Enchanted Ceiling

Though the sun is shining right now over our little town there were a couple of days last week where the fog was very thick. And The Moon Don't Care

I had a weird and sleepless night last night. The wind was howling through a nearby radio tower making a terrible racket. It wouldn't have been that bad, really, except that I let my dog out earlier expecting her to come back and want in. Well she didn't so I went to bed. At about 3:00 am, bless her heart, she began protecting us from the sound of the wind. I got up and tried to get her to come in but she just stayed in the front yard, guarding. The noise was eerily accompanied by a landscape lit by the bright moon above. It was a moment to remember. Even at that I am vexed over the dreams I've missed. So here I sit, blurry eyed and fog brained with a busy and unpredictable day ahead. And the moon don't care.

E Is For...

For Illustration Friday: E is For... Elephant!

About selective memory...

Memory can be your best friend or your biggest foe. Most of us have the tendency to remember and hold on to the bad stuff of our past. Often to the point where it defines us. I was watching the History Channel's "Lincoln" last night and was struck by the sense that with all Lincoln accomplished he could not rise above the terrible memories of his past. We are all like that in ways. But one should not let memories define you. Memories are not real and should not be as relevant as we try to make them. The only real thing is right now...no past no future. Past and future thinking are constructs of the mind, imaginations so to speak. So it is to our benefit that we are selective about what memories we entertain. We can chose if they will be those that build us up or those that tear us apart.

Peace and have a blessed day.

In a week where our Senators showed their true political colors and our world edges closer to another nuclear threat, it is good to have this word from the Lord:

better than to trust in the leaders of men."

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good,
and his kindness is for ever."--Psalm 118 from today's Morning Prayer.

Except for Maryland. The MD legislature overrode a veto by Maryland's governor to force Wal-mart to pay more towards employees insurance. More? They never paid any toward it. Shame on them. Qwest and MTA might be union but at least they bear a small semblance of caring for employees, even if they really don't.

ACLU Blogburst- I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

Tweet! Tweet! Tweet! I smell a rat.

The ACLU is certainly selective about whose rights it protects when those rights are exercised on government property. While it sues the Fredericksburg City Council over praying in Jesus' name it sues a state prison to allow a prisoner to preach. Whaa?!

Case in point: Warren Spratt, convicted murderer who is banned from preaching at Christian services. The new warden of the prison had deemed the giving of authority a danger to the safety of the prison and that decision was upheld by U.S. District Magistrate Judge Jacob Hagopian recently. But as we all know, the ACLU knows how to run our prison and court systems--"wink wink"--and have filed suit.

How interesting that they would defend a murderers right to preach in prison. I thought a prisoner's rights were limited, ie. the punishment for the crime. A person's religious beliefs may be a right, but the ability to gather and incite cannot be overlooked. In my opinion when the right murderer preaches you end up with chaos and radical extremists. Oh! Now I see...it fits the ACLU profile perfectly.

Sunday Nugget-The Antichrist

From todays readings:1 Jn 2:18-21

Children, it is the last hour;
and just as you heard that the antichrist was coming,
so now many antichrists have appeared.
Thus we know this is the last hour.
They went out from us, but they were not really of our number;
if they had been, they would have remained with us.
Their desertion shows that none of them was of our number.
But you have the anointing that comes from the Holy One,
and you all have knowledge.
I write to you not because you do not know the truth
but because you do, and because every lie is alien to the truth.

The History Channel aired the two part program "The Antichrist" last night. It described the impact of the concept of antichrist on the world...from the fact that nearly every warring faction has had it's "antichrist" to fight to the bookselling takeover of the Left Behind series. The show had a host of opinions about the antichrist and endtimes prophecy. Some suggested the antichrist is a literal figure while others refered to him as the spirit of the age. I especially enjoyed the history of dispensationalism which began with Irish clergyman J. N. Darby and became the most popular imported belief of america in the 19th century. It is said that between 1880-1940 hundreds of bible institutes produced hundreds of thousands of pastors and teachers who expounded this teaching. It is little wonder why that version of endtime events is the most widely held in America today.

One thing I took away from the program is a statement that seems to fit today's reading. Bishop Frank Griswold spoke of the older concept of antichrist being that which is not "of" Christ. He said, and I agree, that we should ask ourselves daily, how have I been antichrist today. I think that kind of examination of conscience would be very revealing indeed.

Saturday Evening Post- Brokenness by Lon Solomon

A Mind and Media review of Brokenness: How God Redeems Pain and Suffering by Lon Solomon

"Why do I feel this way? What is God doing to me." So reads the byline on the back cover of Pastor Solomon's book that seeks to explain God's role and purpose for suffering. The author has a unique vantage point to discuss suffering and brokenness. His daughter has suffered grand mal seizures from an early age resulting in what he describes as the "worst emotional black hole" he had ever experienced. This book is the culmination of the lessons learned in that dark place.

Mr. Solomon makes some interesting assertions starting with the fact that while many believe suffering comes from Satan, in fact much brokenness is given by God himself. Taking the story of Job, he shows how the Lord afflicted poor Job, on a dare from Satan. He then goes on to show that brokenness brought on by God is not only the worldview of the book of Job but also of the entire Bible and of its followers.

One of the points I find of interest is the resistance we have to brokenness as a tool of God's grace. I've seen this over and over in my counseling and spiritual direction experience. We seem to be "wired" to desire the product (more godly character, holiness, spiritual strength and wisdom) without enduring the process.

Pastor Solomon's book helps you see there are reasons behind brokenness and helps you honestly ask the question of yourself, "Is brokenness worth it?". Written with discussion questions at the end of each chapter this book is excellent for individual and small group study.

It Came From The Deep

Scary Man at the Beach.

For Photo Friday : The Best of 2005

Of course there probably are better photos taken of or by me in 2005. But this is a fun one and it gets me in a good mood. It's January and I'm already looking forward to summer. I love the sun. The sun in many mystical writings is hailed as an icon of God. Saint Francis says that the sun is the closest representation of God as we have (besides Christ). Others claim that the same soul that is in the sun is the same soul that is in you. The spark of life...the imprint of God in whose image we are made. Whatever your belief, however it is you speak of God, he is as reliable, warm and nurturing, and "light-giving" as the sun. I couldn't live without the sun, neither can I without God.

Peace and sunshine!

Clinging to a Miracle

"We're clinging to one miracle when we were hoping for 13." These are the words of Gov. Joe Manchin, who had been celebrating the misinformation that the miners at Tallmansville, W.Va. had been found alive.

My heart goes out to the victims families and friends. No bigger bomb could have dropped, no greater hope dashed than to receive the final report.
